Welcome to THOHUN-TELI 2020

This online course comprises the first part of THOHUN-TELI which focuses on the basic principles of several relevant topics plus some demonstration videos for collecting various specimens. The following modules were designed to prepare learners’ for activities during the field practicum, so try your best in learn all the modules and accomplish all tasks.


In Year 2015, a teaching platform was developed to integrate One Health into field- and community-based learning. The faculties of Veterinary Science, Tropical Medicine, and Environment and Resource Studies in Mahidol University piloted the International Short Course on Ecosystem Health (or THOHUN-TELI). Since 2019, the course has integrated the community-based learning project of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Khon Kaen University. This year, THOHUN continues to deliver TELI as a high-impact platform to train multidisciplinary students and professionals to prepare them to identify and respond to existing and current infectious threats and public health issues.


THOHUN-TELI will build on the knowledge and experiences of students or the future Thai One Health workforce together with health workers/professionals and enhance vital skills through hands-on and applied learning opportunities.

Expected outcomes of the course

  1. Graduate students will have a strong understanding of the complexity of the environment, domestic and wild animals, and human connections and relevant health issues.
  2. Improved One Health Core Competencies (OHCCs) and technical skills such as cause identification, mitigation and adaptation, risk assessment, and communication of future workforce (graduate students); experience tackling complex health problems in the OH field site through multidisciplinary approach, community participation, and outreach.
  3. Investigations and potential solutions for infectious diseases/health problems originating at the human, animal, and environmental interface will be documented by the students after their OH field experience

Course outline

Introduction of THOHUN-TELI short course

Week 1 (June, 21 – July, 4): e-Learning

Fundamental knowledge and tools for cause identification (e-Learning platform) One Health (OH) concept and workforce development; public health problems in the OH village, wildlife-human conflict, environmental change and related diseases; trans-boundary diseases; risk analysis and laboratory diagnostic techniques.

Module 1: One Health problems
      1. Infectious diseases in animals
      2. Environmental change & related human health and infectious diseases
      3. Anti-microbial resistance
      4. Human-wildlife conflict
Module 2: Risk detection and analysis

1. Sample collection & risk detection

        • Demonstration of direct fecal smear preparation
        • Demonstration of mosquito larval collection
        • Demonstration of mosquito adult trapping
        • Mosquito adult identification
        • Water sampling
      1. Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
        • GIS and related tools for One Health
        • Introduction to app-based data collection tools
        • Setting up Epicollect 5
        • Data collection using Epicollect 5
      2. Risk analysis
        • Definitions of hazard, exposure, and risk
        • Food safety risk analysis
Module 3: Social innovation, One Health, risk communication and community outreach
  1. Introduction to the One Health concept and workforce development platform
  2. Participatory epidemiology
  3. Risk communication
  4. Introduction of social entrepreneurship and social innovation
Week 2 (July, 6 – 11 Tentative): Field exposure and hazard/risk detection
  1. Presentation of information about the One Health village
  2. Visit the One Health village: multidisciplinary identification of animal, human and environmental problems
  3. Planning for hazard identification using knowledge and tools learned from Week 1.
  4. Hazard detection, analysis, and problem-based project presentations
  5. Lecture and practice in Geographic Information Systems and related tools
Week 3 (July, 13 – 17 Tentative): Community approach and risk and behavior change communication
  1. Practice: community approach, risk communication and participatory epidemiology
  2. Planning and development of risk communication/solution
  3. Community approach and risk communication to the community
  4. Class discussion on how to improve the course management, learning and community outreach/risk communication
  5. Course evaluation and awarding of certificates


Learning Assessment

Participants must take pre-and post-tests. Participants must pass (>= 80%) the post test to be eligible for the field practicum.
